Clutch adjustment

I have a 1951 Ford Club Coupe V8 3 speed.
When I try to shift to second gear, the transmission grinds. The car will not go into second gear.
I also have difficulty going into reverse, sometimes requiring me to again shut the car off to go into reverse.
What do I need to do to repair this issue?
Thanks in advance!

I see this is your first post so welcome to the forum. It could be the adjustment, how close to the floor does the clutch start to engage? With what you described it should be close to the floor, tightening the adjuster or making the rod shorter should help.

there is a nut on the adj. rod to adj. the clutch .there should at least 1/4 " of play between through out bearing and pressure  plate. also you might have to double clutch , to get rid of the grinding
