steering column question

Thinking about going with the Ford 302-C4 swap in my 50 convertible. One thing I don't read about is what to do about swapping out the steering column so the automatic shift lever is on the column. What is everybody using for that and what is all involved with that swap out. Thank you! Dave

I have the 302/c4 swap in mine and it has a horrible late model column that I want to change so I'm wondering the same thing myself.

I made a slip on collar/set screw with an attached arm and connected it to the transmission with a rod and pivot end on my 1950 with a 289/AOD transmission.  I used the stock column and shift tube.

Using the column from a 51 with an automatic could be a starting place.  Sam

The column for 1951 is longer than the 49/50. Might cut it to length.  Also 1951 has provision for turn signals.

DO NOT cut a 51 FOM steering column! It's a 1951 FOM ONLY item, and can be hard to find as well as pricey.

Why cut up something you could sell and get enough money to buy a more modern one and have cash left over. Pretty much any auto trans steering column from a 50's or 60 car would work. You are going to be cutting it off and using some sort of joint to connect it to the steering box anyhow.

Not to mention that it is almost impossible to find a turn signal switch for a 51 these days, and they do wear out.

I got a complete column, gear box, steering wheel and all for a steal from a 53 I'm going to use.
